One of the best ways to transform your creative life is developing a daily habit. Writing every day helps you hone your skills and express your thoughts. For aspiring writers, making a daily practice can seem daunting. So, here are three tips to start a daily writing habit.
Make it as easy as possible for you to write
To write every day, don’t make it hard for yourself. Your goal is to make it as easy as possible for you to get started every day. This could mean:
- dedicating a specific space for you to write in each day if possible
- taking your pen and paper (or laptop) with you wherever you go
- keeping your writing tools accessible at all times
- minimizing distractions
You don’t want to waste your writing time by having to set everything up right beforehand. The easier it is, the more likely you will stick to it.
Schedule it into your day
Consistency is key for creating any kind of new habit. Pick a specific time each day dedicated to writing and stick to it. This could be:
- early in the morning before others in the house wake up
- during your morning commute or lunch break
- at night before you go to bed
Make sure to block this time off in your calendar. Treat it as a non-negotiable appointment that you have to attend. Adding it to your daily routine will make it as habitual as drinking coffee or brushing your teeth.
Let go of perfection
Many aspiring writers struggle with perfectionism. Remember, your daily writing does not (and should not) need to be perfect. The point of this is to flex your creative muscles and capture your thoughts. Save the perfectionism for the editing stage.
Let yourself write badly, brainstorm, jot down rough ideas, or even scribble some doodles. This is your time to be creative and have fun.
